Remaking Metropolis

Cities—particularly in Asia—seem to expand, morph, multiply and reinvent themselves.

In this issue of 'Remaking Metropolis' FuturArc spotlights the City: the team looked at projects that, by scale or strategic importance, are transforming the way we see a city; re-crafting its experience and rebranding its identity.

We set out to look for transformations underway on which there is, as yet, no verdict. And nothing says 'remake' better than Singapore's new downtown. A large swath of land surrounding Marina Bay will be home to several new developments including the much-publicised Integrated resort, F1 circuit and Marina Barrage. Gardens by the Bay—by far the most original of these—is close to 100 hectares of prime real estate set aside for gardens, a Central Park-like oasis that aims to be the must-see repository of horticulture in the Tropics.

The team also found projects with considerable bite in other cities—Sydney, Macau, Hanoi, Johor and Shanghai—each with a unique spin on our theme 'Remaking Metropolis'.

In keeping with this theme the FuturArc team simply had to tinker with the Journal's format, remaking its structure, just a little. Each issue now kicks off with a Main Feature, a reflection on the elected theme. FuturArc Showcase will include one or more projects to illustrate it. The FuturArc Interview is a conversation with a shaper of ideas and doer of deeds (this issue we are delighted to welcome Singapore's Minister of National Development, Mr Mah Bow Tan). There is

Kalau disuruh memilih, saya akan memilih Ports of Lima ketimbang Centralismo, debut album Sore. Tapi, Centralismo saja sudah bagus, apalagi Ports of Lima?

Saya sudah mulai mendengarkan materi album ini sejak Essensimo mulai menjadi menu rutin di dalam set panggung mereka. Dan saya sudah suka lagu ini sejak awal. Bahkan ketika deretan lagu di Ports of Lima sudah menjadi lagu-lagu reguler dalam hidup saya, Essensimo masih punya tempat di kasta atas.

Ports of Lima adalah sebuah dasar bagus yang diletakkan Sore sebagai representasi betapa generasi baru musisi Indonesia punya taring untuk bisa berdiri sejajar dengan generasi lama yang makin lama makin kehilangan taji atau bahkan sudah lari dan memosisikan diri mereka sebagai budak industri.

Ini lagu yang menurut saya bagus: Bogor Biru, Essensimo, Setengah Lima, Apatis Ria, Ernestito, dan Karolina. Yang paling hebat adalah Vrijeman!

Bogor Biru sangat 80an dan cocok didengarkan ketika mendengarkan ibunda berseloroh tentang masa depan. Essensimo karakternya mirip dengan No Fruits for Today. Setengah Lima adalah lagu hit yang luar biasa hebat. Apatis Ria membuat anda merenung dengan kadar tinggi. Ernestito membuat anda punya alasan untuk mengenang Quickie Express –bisa jadi, ini salah satu hal bagus dari sedikit hal bagus dari film itu—. Karolina adalah lagu penutup yang sangat bagus. Sedangkan Vrijeman? Haha, lirik tentang preman yang punya kudis berpadupadan dengan lagu yang sangat megah.

Entah kenapa, saya menjadi sangat suka dengan karakter vokal gitaris Reza Dwiputranto. Salah satunya gara-gara Vrijeman itu. Suara tingginya benar-benar membuat lagu itu punya nyawa.

Ports of Lima adalah album yang sangat komplit. Cara mereka menulis lirik juga sangat sederhana menurut saya. Mereka bisa bercerita tentang apapun dengan cara apapun.

Jikalau banyak penggemar mereka di luar sana harus menunggu album ini dalam durasi waktu yang sangat lama, Ports of Lima menjawabnya dengan satu kesan yang sangat mendalam; album ini memang layak untuk ditunggu.

Cari sekarang jika ingin mendapatkan cetakan pertama. Atau anda bisa mendapatkan album ini beberapa waktu kemudian; saya yakin album ini akan dicetak berulang-ulang.
